Fall Colors 2012

Dressing for the fall is easy and while color palettes change season after season, year after year; there are a few simple tips to remember when you begin planning your fall wardrobe.

1. Don’t assume that just because it’s cooler and the days shorter that you can’t still be colorful. Whatever the colors are that you’ve fallen in love with; you can transition them into the fall by moving down the color-palette and choosing more subdued tones.  If you love lemon yellow, consider a butter yellow or even mustard.  Gem stone purples make perfectly pretty lavenders too.

2. Black, tan, grey and white are always excellent staples but don’t limit yourself to neutrals.  If you have a hard time making the transition from bright summer time colors to the more understated fall selections, try wearing neutrals with a pop of summer time color! A camel pea coat with a vibrant scarf or hand bag is one good way and you can also dress up your day wear by pairing neutral trousers/skirt ensemble with a colorful blouse.

3. Fall is a great time to incorporate metallics into your wardrobe – if you were thinking of purchasing a pair of nude heels, consider a gold pair. If you are inclined to wear grey, consider silver or a deep gun-metal hue with some sheen.

4. Accessories are easy to showcase this season because you spend a lot of time covering your outfit with a jacket. Focus on choosing a jacket with interesting details, like a peasant hood or a high collar; even ornate buttons are a great detail choice. As well, choosing boots with great details is another way to let your style shine this fall.  You can’t always get away with rocking boots that are intricate but the fall and winter are the season to try something daring.

5. Finally, your hair! You can go one of two ways; interesting updo’s that incorporate something like a bow constructed from your hair help soften the darker side of the season. However, if you like to embrace the darker inspirations of the season then now’s the time to try a new hair color or cut. A sharp angular cut that draws attention to your features is one great option and if you are looking to change colors, consider skipping the highlights/low-lights altogether and choose a warm solid tone.

Fall/Winter 2012/13 Collections – Fashion on the Runway

So I’ve been holding off discussing the Fall/Winter Fashion Collections, mainly because the actual shows happen in the summer and it just feels like were asking summer to “get lost” a little too early!  I realize we are in the middle of summer still but if I wait much longer this won’t really be news anymore will it? So without further ado…

Black is back this winter but really, it’s a classic that is always in style.  This season Yves Saint Laurant had a parade of women who looked eerily similar to the “Addicted to Love” Girls – in a good way of course!  Masculine inspired suits paired with vibrant red-lips and sleek hair completed the look du jour.  The most wearable aspect of this show were the suit pants and I think this will carry over to the mainstream quite well.  Highly tailored black suit pants with a masculine cut can give any outfit that dash of attitude it might be missing.  Aside from looking chic, it’s also an incredibly comfortable get-up for a day spent at the office or even if you are traveling.

Givenchy had a Matrix meets Samurai feeling about it. Once again it was all about black but Givenchy amped things up by pairing feminine blousy tops with leather jackets and loose fitting slacks.  Also keeping it girly were the bob-cut hair-do’s that made the dark color scheme seem less heavy.  The trends that I think will be catching on from this show are dark lips in shades of plum or maroon and the ever fabulous full length leather gloves.

Dolce has taken it’s own path this season with the vast majority of their pieces incorporating heavy laces. The overall feel of the show was bohemian with old-world gypsy inspire hair and hair-pieces.  Dolce chose to keep fall/winter feeling a little less cool by utilizing warm neutral makeup but on the flip-side they tried to offer a little more coverage from the cold through Victorian-inspired collars. While artistically visionary and well placed in the show, the Victorian collar has a matronly air about it.  Will it mainstream? Perhaps we will see some interesting variations on the turtle neck or even some wearable versions in wedding gown designs but I can’ say this is a likely candidate for every day attire.  I very much enjoyed that Dolce kept some whimsy about them and didn’t get too heavy or dark in the way some of the other designers did this Fall/Winter season.

Valentino portrayed a great mix on the runway encompassing the black color scheme, leather and a bit of a Victorian inspiration.  While the Valentino show was not exclusively in black, it was monochrome and black and white leather were featured predominantly.  The Victorian era permeated the hairstyles with intricate braided up-do’s and long sleeve dresses, comprised of sturdy materials but refreshed by a modest-length.  Crop trousers were a popular choice here as well and all the ladies were sporting the always in-style smokey eye.  Solid colors prevailed here with very little pattern but occasionally a splash of red would brighten the runway and it was always welcomed.  Interestingly, accessories were not that prevalent this season.  A few purses were present here and there but overall it was pretty bare.  Not to say that’s a bad thing, sometimes accessories can overshadow a look as opposed to enhance it so, I must admit, I liked seeing the purse as the star accessory!

Cosmetics GALORE – Which do you love?

I am such a lucky little lady.  I was gifted a vast assortment of make-up from various lines, from eye-shadow to lipstick to concealer! As you can imagine…I had a hay-day trying it all out.  I am just LOVING some of the stuff my perceptive gift-givers chose for me.  I am very pale, freckly and a ginger-kid.  Let me tell you how fun it is trying to find the right shade of concealer. Oh. Boy.  Anyway, I must must MUST! Give a mountain-top shout out to Lancome. The quality of their cosmetics is astounding.  Their eye shadows translate from palette to face flawlessly and true to color, they blend spectacularly and the color assortment is just perfect! I must give a nod to what has now become my favorite eye shadow color, Kitten-heel! Its a shimmery dusty pink with gold undertones and it’s available as a single or in a quad.  It really is like wearing happiness, just one of those colors that make you smile.

The second place finisher, also from Lancome, is there High-Definition Mascara in black.  The brush is simply wicked, no clumps and even coverage PLUS it easily picks up all the little lashes at the corners of the eye.  Another bonus with this mascara? Well, for me, removing mascara sucks! I’m not big on makeup removers so I often just use soap and water, which usually means raccoon-eyes and multiple scrubs.  With this stuff? One wash and gone! It was simply unbelievable.  I caught myself rubbing my eye earlier and then panicked, thinking I smudged it all up, and it hadn’t even flaked! It still looked flawless and my lashes are looking long and plentiful and then it washed away like nothing. Um, can you say “Perfect Product,” is that even possible!?  I can’t say thank you enough to the make-up gurus at Lancome and my fairy gift-givers, Gwen and Kayleigh!

I also tried out the AgeRewind concealer/highlighter duo in fair from Maybelline, which comes in a pen form with concealer on one end and a highlighter on the other. Simply the best under-eye coverage I have ever had. My biggest issue with concealers is that they tend to have yellow undertones and my undertones are pink – so usually concealers don’t ever match my skin and are impossible to blend in.  Not this wonder-wand! Blended magically, I look rested and it hasn’t sunken into any fine lines or pores yet and I applied it 4 hours ago!  The highlighter is great because it is understated. It refracts a bit of light but I don’t look like I have fairy-dust splatter around the contours of my face.

I still have so many pieces to try out and even some nail polish! Oh my! I will have to find some more spare time to fool around with everything.  I’d love to hear what you use, what products you love or hate and what you would recommend.  Also, what are the biggest roadblocks you’ve run into with makeup? Colors, applicators, formulas?  Let’s hear it!

Fashion-forward for cheap! Stay in-Fashion on a budget.

What’s the best way to feel and be fashion forward without spending much money?

Easy-peasy lemon-squeazy! I’m glad you asked. It’s all about the details of course! One of the fastest and most apparent things you can do is get the “in” hairstyle. Luckily this season’s look is top-knots and braids, so you don’ttheberry.com need to visit your hairstylist. This means that other than investing in some pins and elastics, if you don’t already have them, it’s free! You can search online for many braid and knot demonstrations so you can achieve the look at home with a little practice.  The knots are the simplest (if you don’t mind hair headaches) and the braids (depending on which style) can be more complicated and require more practice to master – but it’s well worth the effort.  Some of the most beautiful braiding we are seeing is the Victorian inspired braided crowns, side-swept French-braids and messy beach inspired fish-tail braids.

Another easy way to get in-style is to buy some new nail polish. For less than $10.00 you can slap on the hottest color and/or design yourself! There are many trends to try this year, cool, opaque, pastel nails are really trendy and your nails are a great place to add that pop of neon to your wardrobe without investing in shoes or purses!  You can also use whatever little knick-knacks you have at home to help you create designs and patterns with the polish. Without having to purchase specialty tools you can create nail art like a pro! Use stickers, mailing labels or Washi Tape to block off areas to paint or to make straight lines. Pieces of thread dipped in polish and then briefly laid on the nail haphazardly will create unique lines and feathering effects, while toothpicks can be utilized to create polka dots or small pictures! You are only limited by your imagination.

Make up is another easy way to keep in touch with the seasonal trends and this year we are bearing it all! Natural lips and muted shadows are key, but what’s the focal point this year? EYEBROWS! That’s right, prominent and even overly-prominent brows are what’s making waves this summer. We are moving away from that tailored, over-plucked look and going back to a more Brook Shields-inspired brow.  To achieve this look you can let your brows grow in a bit and just shape them normally, while allowing for more fullness than perhaps you are use to.  Another way is to pencil them in a little more heavily but ensure that the color you use is natural looking – nothing too dark for your complexion.

Looking forward to the fall and winter for make up, we will be seeing the return of the classic smoky eye and deep dark lips in reds and plums.  What else does the coming winter hold? Leather! Oh yes, leather is back with a vengeance and it looks so good!

EXTRA EXTRA! Here is a tutorial for achieving the Fish-Tail Braid at home! http://www.beautylish.com/a/vmnza/fishtail-braid-tutorial

Tresemme Split Remedy = Amazing!

Review: Tresemme Split Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner for normal hair.

Note: The product claims to drastically change your hair in just three uses. I have been using it for over a month, every other day to every 2 days.

Price Point– Excellent 5/5

I paid about $8.00 for both Shampoo and Conditioner at Wal-Mart. A good tip to keep in mind when shampoo shopping; If it’s a new product that you have never used before check out the travel section where they sell miniatures of everything.  New shampoos are often available in miniature for next to nothing, so you can try it without investing in a bulk amount.  If you don’t like the product you won’t be left with an entire bottle of it that you have zero intention of using!

Scent – Good 3/5

Not floral or fruity…it just smells clean, almost like fresh laundry. I enjoy it.

Results – Excellent 5/5

The Verdict

This product REALLY stands up to the claims it makes. My hair feels incredibly soft and looks really healthy.  Believe it or not, before this product I was an avid Head and Shoulder’s 2in1 user :O  I have used Tresemme products in the past and found them to be okay but nothing to write home about.  After the first few washes with this new formula I could not stop touching my hair! It’s like silk now and super manageable. My ends look great, not a split insight. I pushed this product to the limits as well and went as long as possible in between washes to see how it was on oil control. I find that products that leave a large amount of residue in your hair after rinsing tend to cause your hair to look grimy within a day or so of washing.  The less residue the longer your hair looks fresh. I was able to go 5 days WITHOUT WASHING again before my hair started looking oily and in need of a wash.  How amazing is that?! So if you suffer from an oilier than average scalp this might be a great option for you to consider.  I can confidently say that this product will be my go-to from now on and I highly recommend it. I will without a doubt continue to test other products but this has become ‘old faithful’ for me.

I would love to hear from other people who have given this product a try! Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below or email me @ fashionandfimfemme@gmail.com

Olay Total Effects – Testing, Testing, 1,2…3?

Review: Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 Anti-Aging Daily Moisturizer.

Note: I have been using this product for nearly 2 months, every day- often twice a day, according to the product recommendations. I have minor fine wrinkling around the eyes, nothing deep-set so I was really focused on seeing an improvement in that localized area.

Price Point – Good 3/5

I bought this on sale along with a face cleanser for $20.00 CAD. Typically the moisturizer alone sells for $28.00, so based on the regular price I would say GOOD, on the sale price I would say EXCELLENT.

Scent – Amazing 5/5

This product comes in a fragrance-free formula which ultimately smells like sunscreen. I personally prefer fragrance free so this was a bonus for me.

Moisturizing Properties – Fair 2/5

Results – 3/5

The Verdict

I would say this product is ok – just ok.  It’s marketed as a moisturizer but I found that it’s moisturizing properties were lacking. Depending on the type of climate you live in (mine is quite dry) this product could easily be insufficient.  On the plus side it does absorb quite quickly and leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft but within a few minutes of applying I was compelled to reapply because my skin was feeling dry and tight again. Result-wise I can’t say I have noticed a difference in the wrinkles. After my skin went through the rebellious phase of breaking out and getting extra dry, which happens every time I introduce a new skin cream, it looked the same. The fine lines around my eyes were unchanged and as far as prevention goes, it’s sort of a “catch-22.”  If I continue to use it my lines may never get worse but I’ll never know if it’s my genes or the product and if I stop using it and they worsen I’ll never know if the product would have prevented it. That is how the anti-aging market works though, isn’t it? You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t! I feel like prevention is the way to go if you start preventing at about 20 years of age, but if you already have some damage then you need to do repair and prevention, otherwise you’ll never know if you are actually spending your money on a product that works. So go for something that promises visible results in a reasonable time and consider taking before and after photos to really test it. I gave the product a 3 out of 5 for results because although the anti-aging aspect of the product didn’t blow my mind in the least, it did improve my skin’s overall texture and appearance.  I have decided not to continue with this product and will instead be moving onto something that has visible restoring properties as I find prevention-only products require you to invest a lot of faith in their capacity to actually prevent,

JoMP Photography.

and I am a girl who needs to see change to believe something is changing!

What are the Experts Saying?

“The number one thing is prevention. If you put all your money into fixing what time and the sun does to your face and you don’t back up that repair with an oxide sunscreen, damage will continue and only get worse. Oxides include; zinc, silica, or titanium so you should be looking for these ingredients in your skin repair and aging-prevention products. Over time low grade ultra violet A (UVA) rays penetrate skin and cause a loss in collagen which leads to sagging and wrinkles; oxide sunscreens block that penetration. A daily moisturizer that has vitamin A is also good idea. This will help to moisturize and slowly rebuild collagen over time. C&E peptides are also good to lighten, tighten and brighten your skin, so having those in a product is a bonus.  Keep in mind that UV rays can penetrate through glass, cause skin cancer, brown spots, freckles, rosacea and wrinkles, so finding a great daily product is not only key to looking younger but also for your general skin health and well-being.” Asya Ford, RN Dermatology.
